Gov’t moves ahead with swine production and sausage plant at Garden of Eden
Guyana is pushing forward with plans to build a modern swine-production and sausage-processing facility at Garden of Eden, EBD, part of a wider effort to cut pork imports, expand local production and tap into regional markets.
President Irfaan Ali had announced that government is ready to co-invest in new agro-processing projects, including a sausage plant and chicken-nugget facility aimed at meeting growing demand across Guyana and the wider Caribbean.
The Agriculture Ministry notes that Guyana currently imports most of its pork and processed pork products, with the local swine industry operating at just about 10 percent of its potential. As much as two-thirds of local demand for sausages, bacon and ham is still met by overseas suppliers.
By establishing a full-service processing plant, the Government expects several benefits: higher domestic pork output, stronger food security, reduced foreign-exchange leakage, and a transition from raw pork production to higher-value processed meats that earn better returns and support export growth.
The facility will handle everything from breeding and slaughtering to sausage manufacturing, marking a major shift toward producing export-ready pork and other value-added meats. The pig-slaughtering and processing unit, initially estimated at $29 million, has already seen preliminary works completed, including roads, site preparation, fencing and access.
