Gov’t targets two-year clearance of house-lot backlog outside Region Four
Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday said the 2026 National Budget will feature heavy investments aimed at accelerating the development of house lots across the country, as the government moves to clear long-standing backlogs in most regions.
Speaking at his weekly press conference, Jagdeo reiterated a position outlined by President Dr Irfaan Ali a day earlier, noting that the focus will be on the nine administrative regions outside of Region Four, where housing demand is significantly different.
He explained that Region Four presents a unique challenge, as applicants from other parts of the country frequently apply for house lots in the capital region, creating a particularly large and complex backlog. However, Jagdeo said the government is confident that demand in the remaining regions can be addressed more swiftly.
According to the Vice President, the administration believes it can clear the backlog of house-lot applications in all other regions within two years, once the planned investments are implemented. He said the goal is to ensure that any applicant seeking a house lot in those regions would be able to receive one within that timeframe.
