To commemorate five decades of friendship between Guyana and China, the Protected Areas Commission (PAC) has announced plans for the much-anticipated Joe Vieira Park, a state-of-the-art sporting and recreational complex on the West Bank of Demerara.

The project aims to revolutionize community recreation by promoting healthier lifestyles and fostering social connections through a range of modern facilities.

At the center of the development is a strong emphasis on sports. The park will feature a full-size football field with spectator stands for local competitions, a modern basketball court with removable seating for both organized and casual games, and newly constructed tennis and table tennis courts to broaden its athletic offerings.

Beyond athletics, Joe Vieira Park will serve as a cultural and social gathering place. An outdoor theatre and amphitheatre will host cultural performances, live shows and public film screenings, while well-designed seating areas and expansive green spaces will offer inviting spots for relaxation, picnics and family outings.

A prominent highlight of the park will be the Guyana & China Friendship Monument, a tribute to more than 50 years of diplomatic partnership and cooperation between the two nations.

Once completed, the Guyana and China Friendship Joe Vieira Park is expected to become one of the nation’s most stunning recreational destinations. It will embody sustainable and inclusive development, bringing together youth, sports, and culture in a shared space that celebrates unity and progress.
