Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, has announced that Guyanese-born jurist Justice Arif Bulkan will be officially sworn in as a Judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) next week in Guyana.

Justice Bulkan, who was recently appointed to the regional court, is set to take his oath of office before President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Thursday, October 16, at the Office of the President.

According to Nandlall, the ceremony will be conducted in keeping with the tradition of the CCJ, which allows judges of the court to be sworn in within their home jurisdictions- the countries from which they originate.

“It is the tradition that judges of that court take the oath of office in the jurisdiction from which they emanate. So Justice Bulkan is a Guyanese, and we are proud of him,” Nandlall stated during his weekly Issues in the News programme.

He noted that Justice Bulkan’s appointment and upcoming swearing-in reflect Guyana’s continued contribution to the regional judiciary, and the event will be a proud moment for the nation as one of its own takes up a seat on the CCJ bench.
