Guyana now leads the world in oil production per capita
Guyana has reached a historic milestone, officially becoming the world’s largest oil producer per capita after national output climbed to 900,000 barrels per day on November 12, 2025. With a population of about 750,000, the country’s oil production now works out to more than one barrel per person each day, a ratio unmatched anywhere else in the global industry.
The achievement follows the full ramp-up of operations across the Stabroek Block, where more than US$60 billion has already been invested in seven approved offshore projects. The nation’s rapid climb is notable, considering it was producing just 120,000 barrels per day five years ago.
Guyana’s progress stems from strong coordination between the Government, ExxonMobil and its partners, along with hundreds of local and foreign contractors who support offshore operations.
Production is set to climb even higher in the coming years. Uaru and Whiptail are scheduled to start up in 2026 and 2027, each bringing an additional 250,000 barrels per day. Hammerhead, expected in 2029, will add another 150,000 barrels, while the proposed Longtail development is still being examined.
If all goes as planned, Guyana could be producing as much as 1.7 million barrels per day by 2030, further cementing its standing at the top of the world’s per-capita oil rankings.
