Guyana’s Oil Boom Spurs New Offshore Support Contract with Dutch Firm

Guyana’s oil industry continues to expand rapidly, with Netherlands-based marine services provider Smit Lamnalco securing a major multi-year contract from US supermajor ExxonMobil to provide offshore terminal support in the Stabroek block.

Under the agreement, Smit Lamnalco will supply four newbuild Offshore Terminal Support Vessels (OTSVs) to support ExxonMobil’s operations. The vessels will carry out critical operational, maintenance, and logistics activities, including static towage during lifting operations for the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units that dominate the Stabroek landscape.

The deal underscores how Guyana’s offshore boom draws new investment across the supply chain. Smit Lamnalco, now wholly owned by Dutch contractor Boskalis after a 2024 takeover, announced that Turkey’s Uzmar Shipyard will construct the vessels, each designed as RAmpage 6000-DE class ships. At 60 metres in length, the OTSVs will feature bollard pulls of more than 130 tons and Class 2 dynamic positioning systems, equipping them for heavy-duty offshore operations.

The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in early 2028, with subsequent ships arriving quarterly. While financial details remain undisclosed, the move highlights the infrastructure buildout needed to match ExxonMobil’s surging production levels in Guyana.

The oil giant recently increased its output beyond 700,000 barrels per day from the Stabroek block and started production from the One Guyana FPSO in the Yellowtail field. To keep pace with this growth, ExxonMobil has also requested information (RFI) to identify suppliers of multi-purpose support vessels (MPSVs) for its Guyana operations.

The contract with Smit Lamnalco is yet another sign that Guyana’s oil venture is expanding in production and creating ripple effects in the global maritime and offshore services industry. With additional projects on the horizon, the country’s offshore sector continues to attract world-class operators and investments, reinforcing Guyana’s position as one of the fastest-growing oil frontiers in the world.
