Guyana’s Oil Heads to China as First Golden Arrowhead Cargo Sets Sail
Guyana’s newest crude grade, Golden Arrowhead, is now on its way to China, marking a significant shift in the destination of the country’s oil exports as production from the Stabroek Block continues to grow at a rapid pace.Oil analytics firm OilX has confirmed that a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), the Sophia VLCC, has departed Guyana’s offshore fields. The tanker lifted just over 705,000 barrels from the Liza field around October 21, followed by nearly 600,000 barrels of Golden Arrowhead crude from the Yellowtail development on November 4. The Sophia VLCC is expected to arrive in Huizhou, China, in December. This marks the first time China will receive a cargo containing the newly produced Golden Arrowhead crude. It also adds to the small number of long-haul shipments leaving Guyana for Chinese refineries, which usually prefer barrels sourced closer to home due to the long travel distance.Although most of Guyana’s crude normally heads to Europe, with Panama and the Netherlands ranking among the largest direct recipients, the rare movement to China demonstrates how rising output is attracting wider global interest. With Golden Arrowhead joining the export stream and Chinese refiners stepping in for larger lifts, Guyana’s oil is steadily expanding its global footprint, now stretching all the way to the ports of East Asia.
