Guyanese women outliving men by about six years -Min. Anthony

Women in Guyana are living an average of about six years longer than men, according to Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, who is urging citizens to pay greater attention to exercise, diet and other lifestyle choices.

Anthony disclosed that life expectancy for women is approximately 73 years, while for men it stands at around 67 years.

The minister made the disclosure while addressing participants at a fitness walk organised by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs as part of activities for Amerindian Heritage Month 2026.

Against this backdrop, Anthony stressed the importance of adopting healthier habits, particularly as Guyana continues to grapple with chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

He said regular physical activity can play an important role in preventing some illnesses or delaying their onset.

“Many of these things can be avoided or delayed if we exercise regularly,” Anthony said.

However, the minister noted that exercise alone is not enough and encouraged persons to make better dietary choices. He cautioned against excessive consumption of carbohydrates, sugary foods and fast food, which can contribute to unhealthy weight gain and increase the risk of chronic diseases.

Guyanese were instead encouraged to consume more fruits and vegetables while maintaining an active lifestyle.

Anthony also advised against smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, noting that healthier choices can contribute to longer lives.

“So, make wise decisions, don’t overdo the alcohol. Do not smoke. That, too, is important. Live a healthy life, and if you live a healthy life, then you will see your life expectancy, go up,” he said.
