Read the full statement issued by the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI):

The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) strongly refutes the misleading claims published in the June 19 edition of Stabroek News under the headline “Residents slam GWI over burst main at Freeman St.” The assertions made in the article are inaccurate and paint a false narrative of GWI’s operations in the East La Penitence area. Contrary to what has been reported, there is no burst main at the entrance of Freeman Street. What residents are observing is the intentional opening of air valves by GWI’s technical team, which is a necessary and routine operation to remove built-up air from the system and facilitate the restoration of normal water pressure to affected communities.

This activity is part of a comprehensive network stabilization exercise currently underway across East La Penitence, which has already begun yielding positive results. In fact, many residents have expressed satisfaction with the ongoing efforts, noting improved water pressure in their homes. GWI has been working around the clock to complete this process and restore optimal service delivery.

It is deeply unfortunate that despite being informed of the nature of the work being conducted, certain individuals chose to misrepresent the facts to the media. To suggest that GWI is ignoring a “broken main” when the photo in question depicts a deliberate pressure-regulation process is not only inaccurate, but mischievous and irresponsible.

We urge members of the public and media to seek clarification through the proper channels before publishing or circulating unverified information. GWI maintains an open-door policy and encourages accurate and constructive reporting that supports national development rather than misleads the public.

The company remains committed to transparency, accountability, and delivering reliable water service to all Guyanese.
