A hazardous-waste cell is being constructed at the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill as part of ongoing upgrades to Guyana’s solid-waste disposal infrastructure, according to the Ministry of Finance’s 2026 Mid-Year Report.
The development forms part of Government’s wider programme to improve waste-management practices and disposal facilities across the country.
According to the report, $696.1 million was spent during the first half of 2026 on programmes aimed at strengthening local democratic organs, improving solid-waste practices and enhancing local-level disposal infrastructure.
At Haags Bosch, the Ministry said upgrade works are continuing and specifically include the construction of a dedicated hazardous-waste cell.
“Additionally, upgrade works continue at the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill which includes the construction of a hazardous waste cell,” the report stated.
The report, however, does not provide details on the size, cost or expected completion date of the hazardous-waste cell, nor does it specify the categories of hazardous waste that will be handled at the facility.
Beyond Haags Bosch, works were also advanced during the first six months of the year on landfill sites and access roads at Zorg-en-Vlygt, Laurentia Catherina, Lusignan, Zorg-en-Hoop and 10 Miles.
The investment comes as Government continues efforts to strengthen the country’s overall waste-management system.
In April, the Clean592 App was implemented, allowing environmental violations to be reported to the Environmental Protection Agency for action. The following month, in June, Government began preparing a National Solid Waste Management Strategic Plan, which the Ministry said is intended to improve waste-management systems and guide long-term investment and policy decisions in the sector.
For the remainder of 2026, Government plans to continue works on regional landfill sites and access roads, alongside recycling programmes, public-awareness activities, community engagement and solid-waste clean-up exercises.
