The High Court in Demerara on Wednesday sentenced a 24-year-old man to 10 years in prison for the rape of a seven-year-old boy – a ruling that left the child’s mother in tears.

Justice Damone Younge handed down the sentence to Shemar Benn, 24, also known as “Headrest” and “Eve Rat,” who admitted to committing the act on June 13, 2021, in the county of Demerara.

In court, Benn initially declined to speak but eventually stood and said, “I’m so sorry for what I did,” before pleading for forgiveness.

His sentencing followed a guilty plea. Justice Younge began with a base term of 18 years but deducted four years after considering mitigating factors, including Benn’s remorse and cooperation.

She added one year for aggravating factors, including the victim’s age and the long-term trauma. With a final one-third reduction based on the guilty plea, Benn was sentenced to 10 years behind bars.

Lead prosecutor Nelissa Peterkin, along with State Counsel Padma Dubraj, Simran Gajraj, and Caressa Henry, presented the case. Defence attorney Tonza Sarrabo represented Benn.

Benn had originally been released on bail following his arrest but was remanded to the Lusignan Prison in March this year, where he remained until sentencing. In March of this year, police issued a wanted bulletin for him in connection with the offence.

The court acknowledged the devastating impact of the assault on the young victim and emphasised the need to send a clear message that crimes against children will be met with firm punishment.
