Hosororo Secondary School is being positioned as a major education hub in Region One, combining traditional academics with technical and vocational training aimed at preparing students for employment, entrepreneurship and further studies.
The Ministry of Education highlighted the development of the school in a Facebook post on Sunday following a visit by Education Minister Sonia Parag, Permanent Secretary Shannielle Hoosein Outar, Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain and Assistant Chief Education Officer for Secondary Education Sherwyn Blackman.
Located in the Mabaruma Sub-District, the school is expected to expand access to secondary education while providing students with opportunities to gain practical skills alongside their academic qualifications.
During the visit, Parag said the facility will allow more students to be accommodated while providing teachers with an improved environment in which to work.
“We can have all of the students in, where we can have the teachers comfortably accommodated and provide that kind of access to education that we really wanted to,” she said.
A major component of the school’s programme will be Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), with students expected to receive exposure to several practical disciplines.
Blackman said training will include furniture making, building technology, AutoCAD and small motor repairs.
“The big push is also on TVET and ensuring that every child can leave a secondary school with a skill in TVET,” he said.
The focus on technical education is intended to ensure students leave school with skills that can be applied directly within their communities or used to pursue employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.
The school has also been outfitted with smart classrooms and specialised laboratories for Information Technology, Biology, Chemistry and Home Economics.
Dedicated facilities have also been established for TVET programmes, allowing students to undertake hands-on training in addition to their classroom studies.
Modern dormitories have been provided for students, while living quarters have been constructed for teachers, an arrangement expected to improve access for students and educators travelling from communities outside the immediate Mabaruma area.
The investment is expected to strengthen secondary education across the sub-district while providing students with a broader mix of academic and practical learning opportunities.
