Police ranks in Region One have moved swiftly to recover an illegal firearm and arrest two suspects following an incident that left a Mabaruma taxi driver shaken over the weekend.

According to the Guyana Police Force, the case began on Saturday when a 50-year-old driver from Mabaruma reported that he had been assaulted and threatened during a fare dispute. The attacker allegedly pulled out what appeared to be a firearm while confronting the driver.

Once the report was filed, investigators launched a follow-up operation in the early hours of Sunday. Acting on information received, ranks tracked down two construction workers, ages 21 and 23, both originally from Parika, East Bank Essequibo, who were believed to be connected to the confrontation.

During questioning, one of the men reportedly led police to a bushy location in Mabaruma. There, ranks unearthed a .22 pistol, which investigators suspect was the same weapon brandished during the altercation.

The firearm has since been lodged as evidence. Both suspects remain in police custody as the investigation continues. Authorities say their probe is ongoing as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
