…Sarwan to coach talent

President Dr Irfaan Ali has pledged greater opportunities for indigenous athletes, saying they have the skills and potential to represent Guyana at the national level.

Speaking at the Heritage Games on Saturday, the President said for too long indigenous youth were denied equal chances in sports.

“I’ve asked Minister Charles Ramson, of course Sarah, and Jacobs, to ensure that our indigenous communities are given an equal chance to represent the Golden Arrowhead in all of our national sports,” he told the gathering.

He announced that the Guyana Cricket Board will now include an indigenous team in its competitions and trials, with former West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan appointed to coach and mentor indigenous cricket talent. Former West Indies player Roger Harper will also focus on developing women’s cricket in these communities.

Similar directives have been given to the Football Association and Volleyball Federation, while new basketball courts will soon be installed in schools. By the end of the year, Ali said, indigenous teams will be competing in national tournaments as part of his ‘One Guyana’ vision.

The President stressed that just as indigenous youth excel in education and health, they can also shine in sports.
