General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, says the growing number of individuals from other political backgrounds joining the party is doing so because they genuinely want to serve Guyana, support inclusive national development, and work towards uniting all Guyanese.
Jagdeo addressed recent political endorsements during a press engagement on Thursday at Freedom House in Georgetown, noting that those choosing the party are motivated by a commitment to the country rather than personal rewards or political positions.
“These people aren’t defecting; they’re endorsing our national plan and genuinely want to work for all of Guyana,” Jagdeo stated. “They see our party promoting a multi-ethnic, inclusive platform, compared to the divisive approaches of others. They’re endorsing competence and democratic values over the proven incompetence of the opposition.”
He criticised attempts to vilify these individuals, noting that such negative attacks now isolate the accusers rather than their targets.
Jagdeo highlighted that many people joining the party understand they might face criticism but still choose to support the party’s development agenda.
The Vice President clarified that the party has not offered any political positions or incentives in exchange for endorsements.
“Unlike APNU and AFC, we do not share positions before elections. Not a single person who joined us has been promised anything. People join because they see a positive future for themselves and the nation.”
He referenced recent endorsements, including former opposition parliamentarian Geeta Chandan-Edmond, who publicly supported President Ali, contrasting her commitment with criticism from opposition figures such as Ganesh Mahipaul.
Jagdeo also addressed former Georgetown Mayor Ubraj Narine, who had recently announced that he would not be joining the PPP/C. Jagdeo clarified the PPP/C had never sought Narine’s support, dismissing his public statement as irrelevant.
“We want genuine people who share our vision of working collectively for progress and unity,” Jagdeo stated. “Nobody jumps onto a sinking ship. People see our party rising, united, and determined to build a prosperous future for everyone in Guyana.”
Jagdeo reiterated that the PPP/C welcomes everyone willing to contribute positively to Guyana’s development, regardless of their previous political affiliations, noting that their primary motivation must always be the nation’s well-being above personal interests.
