Jhandi attendee killed in Corentyne road accident

A 47-year-old woman was killed Thursday afternoon after she was struck by a motor lorry while reportedly attempting to cross the Number 67 Public Road, Corentyne.

Dead is Priya Hunte, of Lot 95 “B” Number 67 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

In an interview with reporters, her father, Pablo Hunte, said she left home around 13:00 hours to attend a Jhandi.He said he later received word from a young girl that his daughter had been involved in an accident.

Pablo said he immediately went to the scene, but Priya had already been transported to the Number 75 Public Hospital.

Neighbour Alicia Rashdhari said she remained at the Jhandi after it ended and saw Priya leave to return home. Rashdhari said she heard a strange sound only minutes after Priya left and went to check what had happened.

She said Priya was found lying lifeless on the roadway and was subsequently taken to the Number 75 Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Rashdhari said motor lorry GAF 6180, which had eight occupants, had stopped to allow Priya to cross the road. She alleged that lorry GAE 8823 then approached from behind and struck the woman.

Rashdhari further alleged that the driver of GAE 8823 drove away from the scene following the collision.

She said concerned citizens pursued the driver and eventually caught him. He was subsequently taken to the Springlands Police Station.i

“We want justice,” she revealed.

Police said the eight persons travelling in GAF 6180 were also taken to hospital and are receiving treatment for minor injuries.

Police confirmed that the drivers of both lorries are in custody assisting with the investigation.
