LECI clears air on Wismar blackout — says One Communication pole caused outage

The Linden Electricity Company Inc. (LECI) has denied claims that it had any role in the August 10 blackout that left Wismar residents without power, saying the outage was caused by a fallen utility pole belonging to One Communication.

The company explained that the incident occurred in Wisroc, near Wisburg Secondary School. According to LECI, the pole fell on a power line operated by the Linden Utility Services Co-op Society Limited (LUSCSL), triggering a total outage across the Wismar area. LECI stressed that it had no control over the fallen pole or the infrastructure involved. “Any suggestion that LECI deliberately orchestrated, facilitated, or contributed to this outage is false, defamatory, and entirely without merit,” the company said.

The power provider said one of its employees living in the area was among the first to notify management of the incident. LECI went on to say that it immediately contacted LUSCSL’s engineer to report the situation and recommended isolating the damaged section to restore power to other parts of Wismar. The company added that this action helped restore electricity to several areas, including Burnham Drive, where an APNU public event was scheduled that evening.

Management also pointed out that their public update on Facebook was issued on their own initiative, not because of outside instructions or pressure.

LECI maintained that it remains committed to providing safe and reliable electricity to both the Wismar and Mackenzie shores, regardless of political affiliation. The company vowed to continue keeping residents informed while working to prevent the spread of misinformation.
