Leguan set for lower power costs, better transport and new economic push
Residents of Leguan Island are poised to see significant improvements in living standards and economic activity as the government moves to roll out a series of development projects ahead of its first budget in the second term.
During an engagement with residents at the Leguan Secondary School, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali outlined plans aimed at reducing the cost of living, strengthening agriculture, improving transportation links and positioning the island for future growth.
A significant focus is on electricity. With the recent installation of a 0.60-megawatt grid-forming solar farm, electricity costs on the island are expected to fall, benefitting both households and businesses. Technical teams are currently assessing ways to optimise the system to deliver greater efficiency and capacity.
Transportation between Leguan and neighbouring islands is also set to improve. Additional ferry services will be commissioned to facilitate more frequent movement of residents, farmers, and agricultural equipment.
At the same time, engineers are carrying out final assessments for the long-discussed bridge linking Leguan and Wakenaam, a project expected to significantly enhance connectivity and economic integration.
Agriculture remains a central pillar of the development push. Rice farmers will benefit from a large-scale drainage and water storage project on the eastern side of the island, covering roughly 13,000 acres. The initiative includes new drainage canals, intakes, intermediate structures and additional heavy-duty machinery, with construction expected to begin after the 2026 budget is presented. A mini-excavator will also be delivered to support maintenance of interlocking drains.
Beyond agriculture, the government is positioning Leguan as a future tourism hub. Growing investor interest is expected to translate into new businesses, increased food production and job creation directly on the island.
Health services are also slated for expansion. New X-ray units have been acquired for the Leonora Cottage Hospital, while improvements are planned for maternal, dental and laboratory services to strengthen healthcare access for residents.
In addition, efforts will be made to ensure young people on the island can take advantage of national training and education programmes.
Government officials will return to provide guidance on enrolling in opportunities offered through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning and Coursera.
The outreach also provided an opportunity for residents to raise concerns, including traffic safety, agricultural challenges, security and other community issues, which were noted as part of the government’s ongoing engagement with the island.
