A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison for the 2022 murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, 28-year-old Loretha Simon, who was fatally stabbed at her mother’s Sophia, Greater Georgetown home.

Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif handed down the sentence to Terrence Thomas, called ‘Oosh’, after considering aggravating and mitigating factors.

The Demerara High Court judge began sentencing at 30 years but deducted time for Thomas’ early guilty plea and other factors, arriving at the final term.

Thomas had pleaded guilty to the capital offence of murder, admitting that he fatally stabbed Simon on January 27, 2022.

According to prosecutor Darin Chan, Simon was at her mother’s Sophia home just after midday and was preparing to cook curry when Thomas launched his deadly attack.

She was stabbed multiple times in the presence of her nine-year-old sister.

The convict fled the scene, leaving the murder weapon behind.

Simon, who was pregnant at the time of her death, was described as a kind and loving young woman whose life was brutally cut short.
