Kenwin Collins, 23, has been charged with causing the death of an 81-year-old woman by dangerous driving following an accident in Chesney, Region Six.
He has also been charged with riding without a safety helmet and carrying a passenger without one.
Collins, of Lot 258 Number 1 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the Albion Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
The charges stem from the death of Menawatty Harilall of Lot 70 Chesney, New Scheme, who was struck by Collins’ motorcycle on March 26.
While Collins pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death, he admitted guilt to the helmet-related offences.
His attorney, Everton Singh-Lammy, informed the court that a settlement had been reached between Collins and the family of the deceased and requested that the matter not proceed.
Police Prosecutor Meika Crawford did not oppose bail but noted the file would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further advice.
Considering Collins’ financial status, Magistrate Matthias granted him self-bail. He is expected back in court on July 29.
Reports indicate that Menawatty had left home around 8:30 hours on March 26 after praying and was crossing the road to dispose of flowers in a trench when the motorcycle struck her, causing fatal injuries.
She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port Mourant Public Hospital. Collins was subsequently apprehended.
