A motorcyclist has died following a collision with a cow along the Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice Public Road in the early hours of Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Jamal Hughes, 25, formerly of Lot 90 Glasgow Village, East Bank Berbice.
Sheriff News Network was informed that on Monday at approximately 12:30 hours, Hughes was riding motorcycle CP 2700 with a pillion passenger, 24-year-old Marashia Dehart of Lot 52 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam. They were travelling south in the eastern lane of Number 41 Stanleytown Public Road, allegedly at a high speed.
At the time of the accident, neither the driver nor the pillion passenger was wearing a safety helmet.
According to the information gathered, the motorcycle collided with an unbranded cow that was crossing the road from east to west.
As a result of the collision, both Hughes and Dehart were thrown onto the road surface and sustained injuries.
Hughes was found semi-conscious, while Dehart was conscious when public-spirited citizens arrived to assist.
Both were transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Hughes was examined by a doctor on duty, who treated him for head and other bodily injuries. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 1:55 hours.
Dehart was also examined and treated for minor injuries before being discharged.
Hughes’ body is at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
