Investigators have detained a third individual as part of the ongoing probe into the MV Barima disaster.
The individual, identified as a Transport and Harbours Department superintendent, was taken into custody after being questioned by the Criminal Investigation Department regarding his role in operations linked to the vessel’s departure.
The disclosure was made during Wednesday’s briefing on the national recovery effort, where officials confirmed that no charges have been filed against the detained individual.
Authorities say the superintendent was responsible for overseeing activities at the stelling, including the movement of passengers and cargo.
Police have also secured additional time to continue questioning persons currently in custody as investigations progress.
The latest detention comes as authorities intensify efforts to determine the circumstances that led to the capsizing of the MV Barima, which occurred during its voyage from Port Kaituma to Parika.
Meanwhile, the government has indicated that an independent Commission of Inquiry will be established following the completion of recovery operations to examine the events surrounding the tragedy.
