Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, has launched a scathing attack on We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) presidential candidate Azruddin Mohamed, branding him and his newly formed political party as corrupt and unfit to lead Guyana.

Addressing a packed crowd at a recent People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) rally in Black Bush Polder, Nandlall did not hold back in his assessment of Mohamed, who is currently sanctioned by the United States for alleged gold smuggling, tax evasion, and public corruption.

“But let me tell you something — that party is born out of criminality. It has no future,” Nandlall declared to loud applause. “A vote for Azruddin Mohamed is a waste of time. Do not waste your time on September 1.”

Mohamed is facing charges from the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) for allegedly making false declarations that allowed him to pay reduced duties on a luxury Lamborghini. He has been released on bail while the matter is before the courts.

Nandlall warned the electorate not to be misled by WIN’s campaign, describing it as nothing more than a collection of false promises and gimmicks.

“The lines are drawn; there is no match,” he told supporters. “But we cannot afford to be complacent. Every single one of you must go to that polling station and make sure you mark that ‘X’ next to the cup.”

The “cup” is the symbol of the ruling PPP/C, which is seeking to extend its governance mandate in the upcoming elections scheduled for September 1.

Turning to broader political criticism, Nandlall also targeted the People’s National Congress (PNC), the dominant party within the opposition A Partnership for National Unity.

He revisited the 2020 elections, which were marred by controversy and accusations of attempted rigging.

“Every time the PPP is out of government, democracy is stolen, your freedom is taken away, your rights are trampled upon,” Nandlall stated. “The PNC can never be trusted with democracy in this country again.”

He contrasted that with what he described as the PPP/C’s strong record in office and global reputation. Nandlall praised President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s administration for restoring Guyana’s credibility and pushing the country to new economic heights.

The AG noted that Guyana is now the fastest-growing economy in the world, the leading voice on energy security in the Caribbean, a climate change advocate, and one of the most attractive investment destinations globally.

In a direct appeal to the Black Bush Polder community, known for its vital role in Guyana’s agriculture sector, Nandlall lauded their contributions over the decades.

“Because of your indomitable spirit, because of your tremendous hard work and dedication, under the leadership of Dr. Ali, you are poised to feed the Caribbean over the next five years,” he said.

He also highlighted the strength of the PPP/C’s leadership team, including Prime Minister Mark Phillips and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, whom he called a “Champion of the Earth.”

With less than two weeks until election day, Nandlall urged supporters to remain vigilant and committed to turning out in large numbers.

“This election is one of the most important elections in the history of independent Guyana,” he stressed. “We cannot afford to waste a single vote.”

Concluding his address with a pledge of continued engagement, Nandlall promised supporters a celebratory return after victory at the polls.

“After the election victory, we will come back to Black Bush Polder, and we gon’ sport like hell—night and day,” he said, drawing cheers from the enthusiastic crowd.
