Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, S.C., has rejected claims by Alliance for Change (AFC) Leader Nigel Hughes that he serves as the legal advisor to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), describing the allegations as “false, misleading, and politically motivated.”

During his weekly programme “Issues In The News,” Nandlall clarified that while his office provides legal opinions to state agencies upon request, including GECOM, he is not, nor has he ever been, the legal advisor to the elections body.

“The Attorney General is the principal legal advisor to the Government of Guyana and the most senior legal officer of the State,” he explained. “Providing a legal opinion upon request does not make one the legal advisor of an agency.”

Nandlall cited decades of precedent where independent constitutional bodies, including GECOM, have sought guidance from the Attorney General’s Chambers. He pointed to the 2020 elections impasse, where he personally witnessed government-appointed Commissioners seeking legal advice from the AG’s office.

“Let them deny that,” he said, challenging commissioners Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin, and Desmond Trotman to refute his claims.
