New dialysis centres across regions to expand access to life-saving treatment

The Ministry of Health is set to expand access to critical kidney care with plans to construct six new dialysis centres across Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six, bringing treatment closer to patients who depend on the life-saving service. The new facilities will be located at Lima (Region Two), De Kinderen (Region Three), Diamond and Enmore (Region Four), Bath (Region Five), and Number 75 Village (Region Six). The move is aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and reducing the burden on patients who currently travel long distances for treatment. For patients living with kidney disease, the expansion represents more than just new infrastructure. It offers improved access to consistent, life-sustaining care. Shirley Kissoon, who receives treatment at the Ameena Gafoor Medical and Dialysis Centre in Parika, said she feels “rejuvenated” after each session.Kissoon was among several patients who recently received financial assistance to help offset the cost of dialysis, highlighting ongoing efforts to support those requiring long-term care. The initiative forms part of broader government investment in the health sector, which has seen continued upgrades to hospitals, expansion of specialised services, and increased access to treatment nationwide. The additional centres are expected to complement existing facilities as cases of non-communicable diseases continue to rise.Funding for the project falls under the government’s 2026 health budget, which allocates $161.1 billion to enhance infrastructure, improve maternal and child health services, and elevate the overall quality of care.Interested contractors have until April 7, 2026, to submit bids for the project. Tender documents, priced at $3,500, must be submitted to the chairman of the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board at the Ministry of Finance on Main and Urquhart Streets, Georgetown.Dialysis is a medical treatment required when the kidneys can no longer effectively filter waste and toxins from the blood, making regular access to the service essential for patients’ survival.
