
An accident along the Bee Hive Public Road on the East Coast of Demerara on Tuesday night has claimed the life of a 28-year-old man and left several others injured.
Dead is Dindyal Rantydeo, a resident of Mahaicony, who was driving motor car PGG 2109 at the time of the accident. He had one passenger with him, a 37-year-old man from Fairfield, Mahaicony, who sustained injuries.
According to police reports, the other vehicle involved, PAH 766, was being driven by a 32-year-old man from Mahaica. The car had four passengers onboard, all of whom were injured during the crash.
Initial investigations revealed that at about 20:00 hrs, the driver of motor car PAH 766 was heading east along the northern lane of the road when he noticed a car with hazard lights on in the opposite direction, reportedly due to a horse crossing the road.
At that moment, Rantydeo, who was driving west in motor car PGG 2109, reportedly overtook the vehicle with its hazard lights flashing and collided head-on with motor car PAH 766.
The impact of the crash caused injuries to all occupants of both vehicles. Rantydeo was rendered unconscious and was transported by public-spirited citizens in a police vehicle to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The other injured individuals were taken to the Mahaicony Public Hospital for treatment. Police ranks arrived on the scene around 20:10 hrs.
The driver of motor car PAH 766 was subjected to a breathalyser test, which showed no trace of alcohol. Both vehicles have been lodged for mechanical inspection by a Licencing and Certifying Officer.
A Notice of Intended Prosecution was also served as part of the ongoing investigation.
