Joy and gratitude echoed across the Essequibo Coast on Monday as the 2025 “Because We Care” cash grant distribution commenced in Region Two.

A total of 12,844 learners across the region are set to benefit from the initiative, with $706,420,000 being disbursed.

Distribution began at several cents, including Riverstown, where parents from surrounding communities such as Suddie and Hibernia gathered early in the day. Many expressed heartfelt appreciation for the grant, which they said eases the financial burden of back-to-school preparations.

Narine Mangal, a mother of four from Aurora, said the grant was more than just a monetary boost.

“Every year, this grant helps me prepare my children for school. I can buy uniforms and books, and I even help with transportation. With the rising cost of living, this support means everything to me,” she shared, visibly emotional.

Regional Education Officer Shondelle Hercules reported that the distribution process was smooth and well-coordinated. She commended the Ministry of Education for its consistent commitment to ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to succeed.

“This grant is more than just financial aid—it represents a national commitment to our children’s education. It allows families to focus on what truly matters: learning, growth, and opportunity,” she said.

Hercules noted that the initiative is not only about affordability but also about equity, ensuring that children from every community, regardless of their background, have an equal chance at academic success.

The distribution of the grant commenced last year in Regions Seven and Nine. It has been increased to $50,000, coupled with the $5,000 uniform allowance, giving parents $55,000 per child.

According to the Education Ministry, the programme is set to benefit approximately 205,000 students, putting $11 billion into the pockets of parents. The distribution for other regions is expected imminently.
