
A major anti-narcotics operation led by a woman Deputy Superintendent of Police resulted in the destruction of more than $21 million worth of marijuana at Yarrowkabra Backdam on Friday.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the team discovered and destroyed two separate cannabis farms spanning a combined total of three acres. The larger of the two farms measured approximately two acres and contained an estimated 4,500 cannabis plants, ranging in height from three to five feet.
During the operation, police also uncovered a makeshift camp on the premises. A barrel containing about 140 pounds of dried cannabis was found at the camp.
The second farm, measuring about one acre, contained roughly 1,500 cannabis plants, ranging from one to two feet tall.
All plants, along with the dried marijuana and the structures on both farms, were destroyed by fire.
Police estimate the total street value of the narcotics destroyed during the operation to be approximately $21,083,664. No arrests were announced as the operation remains ongoing.
