Police warn motorists against overtaking multiple vehicles, unsafe passing

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is warning motorists against dangerous overtaking practices, including passing several vehicles at once and overtaking on the left when it is not lawfully permitted.

In a road safety advisory issued on Sunday, the Force said it has observed motorists displaying poor judgement and impatience by weaving through traffic, overtaking multiple vehicles and attempting to pass in areas where visibility is restricted.

The GPF reminded drivers that dangerous driving is an offence under Section 36(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, and can lead to serious accidents, injuries and deaths.

According to the Guyana Highway Code, a driver overtaking another vehicle travelling in the same direction should generally pass on the right-hand side, once it is safe to do so.

Motorists were specifically cautioned against overtaking around bends and corners, when there is oncoming traffic, or in areas where they cannot clearly see the road ahead.

Drivers were also urged to avoid cutting sharply into traffic or forcing other road users to brake or swerve.

Before attempting to overtake, the Force said motorists should check their mirrors and blind spots, observe approaching traffic, signal and ensure there is enough room to safely complete the manoeuvre.

The GPF noted that motorists convicted of dangerous driving could face fines or imprisonment, along with disqualification from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence. A driver’s licence could also be suspended or cancelled in accordance with the law.

“No journey is so urgent that it justifies endangering the lives of others,” the Force warned, as it urged motorists to exercise patience and sound judgement on the country’s roadways.
