President Dr. Irfaan Ali has described the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) as the true unifying force in Guyana’s political landscape, contrasting his party’s philosophy of inclusion and development with what he called the “coalition of division and incompetence” seeking power ahead of the September 2025 elections.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event on Wednesday, President Ali sharply criticised the motives and history of opposition figures coalescing ahead of the polls, pointing to their record of what he termed electoral manipulation, economic mismanagement, and divisive rhetoric.
“If you have the same people who tried to rig an election, the same individuals who claimed that 32 is greater than 33, the same persons who destroyed the economy for five years, sent home sugar workers, and almost shut the rice and bauxite industries—what are we talking about? A coalition of incompetence? A coalition of undemocratic forces?” Ali asked.
The President noted that many in the opposition remain “stuck in the past,” focused on hate and division, and unable to articulate a cohesive strategy or vision for Guyana’s future.
“Their only objective is to remove the People’s Progressive Party Civic from government, not to grow Guyana, expand our horizons, or provide jobs and opportunity. They cannot come up with a structural strategy that would enable the country’s development,” he said.
Ali attributed the surge of support for the PPP/C to the party’s proven record and philosophy of national unity.
“Many persons are gravitating to the PPP because of the philosophy, because of the policies, because of the results they have seen. People can compare what happened in five years under the opposition with what has happened in the last five years under our government,” he stated, arguing that Guyanese are now able to make informed decisions about which party has the country’s best interests at heart.
When asked about welcoming former opposition members into the PPP’s fold, President Ali stressed the importance of forgiveness and moving forward. He explained that while some former opposition figures have not sought atonement, others have openly embraced democratic principles and acknowledged their past missteps.
“Forgiveness is a process. These persons are moving forward, knowing that they’re now part of something better for Guyana, for democracy, and the rule of law.”
President Ali reaffirmed that the PPP’s guiding philosophy has always been to build a national front, bringing together Guyanese of every class, race, and religion.
“The PPP is demonstrating this inclusiveness and unity. Our philosophy is national in nature, inclusive, and unifying. That is why our philosophy is winning, and that is why the philosophy of the collated opposition is losing—they are still stuck in the mould of division and undemocratic practices.”
“The PPP will continue to put Guyana first,” the Head of State concluded.
