President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Tuesday issued a major directive to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), ordering that every rank, from constable upward, must secure passes in Mathematics and English within the next three years.
Speaking at the Force’s Traditional Christmas Breakfast, the President told senior officers that they must use the Guyana Digital School platform to upgrade the academic qualifications of their subordinates.
He said the online school is accessible around the clock and must become a standard tool for capacity-building across the organisation.
“We now have the Guyana Digital School. Available 24 hours. Available 24×7,” the President stated. “We must work in the next three years to ensure every single one of our rank pass mathematics and English procedures.”
Dr. Ali instructed commanders to ensure all ranks are registered on the platform before the end of this year.
“Take it upon yourself to get them registered on the Guyana Digital School before the end of this year,” he said.
He also advised that the focus should be on core competencies first, instead of chasing large subject lists.
“And don’t have them focus on eight subjects and nine subjects. Let them first focus on mathematics and English,” he stressed.
The President said he wants the nation to be able to proudly say that every police officer meets the basic academic requirements expected in a modern, professional law-enforcement body.
“Take that as your challenge and let us have a police force in which every single rank and officer can say, and we can say proudly, they all have passes in mathematics and English. That will be something to celebrate,” Dr. Ali declared.
