Quick action by firefighters averted disaster at Berbice School
Quick action by firefighters from the New Amsterdam Fire Station prevented a canteen at the Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) from being destroyed on Monday afternoon.
According to the information received, the New Amsterdam Fire Station was contacted at approximately 17:09 hours. Subsequently, three units responded: two fire tenders and one ambulance.
Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald told the media that when the crew arrived at the location, they observed smoke emanating from the institution’s canteen.
In an effort to prevent further destruction, firefighters gain forceful entry and extinguish the fire. McDonald confirmed that the wall suffered minor damage.
Regarding the origin of the inferno, McDonald said an attendant left a deep fryer with oil unattended.
