Firefighters from the New Amsterdam Fire Station acted swiftly to prevent a serious disaster on Thursday morning when they responded to a building fire.
Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald reported in a media interview that the Fire Service received a phone call at approximately 8:50 hrs about a fire at Lot 4 Mount Sinai, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Shortly after the call, two fire tenders were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the upper floor of the building was engulfed in flames.

“I was standing in the compound of the New Amsterdam Fire Station when we observed the smoke. When the crew arrived, and based on the smoke that I personally saw, I recognised that the fire was under control. Because of the fire dynamics, I was able to determine from a distance that the situation was manageable,” McDonald stated.
The firefighters quickly took action and successfully stopped the blaze from spreading to other parts of the structure. Fortunately, the lower floor was not damaged.
Reports indicate that five people occupied the building, but none were at home at the time of the fire. McDonald noted that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
