Rice glut presents opportunity for stockpiling – CRG Chairman
Chairman of the Cooperative Republicans of Guyana (CRG), Mr. Jamil Changlee, has described the current glut of rice on the world market as a “blessing in disguise,” noting that Guyana should seize the moment to build up its grain reserves.
In a letter to the media, Changlee cautioned that with global tensions rising and the threat of war looming, Guyana cannot afford to be caught unprepared. “During this period of heightened tensions and potential war, we as a nation have an opportunity to build our grain reserves in anticipation of supply chain disruptions and shortages. For this reason, the stockpiling of our local grain should be encouraged,” he stated.
He added that CRG supports the move but stressed that any stockpiling exercise must ensure the quality of the grain is preserved, while also safeguarding farmers’ ability to meet their break-even targets. “Maintaining the viability of the industry during this period of potential war is essential to ensuring that our citizens have the food needed for future consumption during wartime,” Changlee said.
The CRG Chairman further pointed to the economic opportunities that could emerge from this approach, such as the production of aged basmati rice, which would fetch higher value if not used during storage. He also urged government to consider other areas of the agriculture sector, like legumes, for additional stockpiling.
Changlee stressed that while Guyana can play a role in easing regional tensions, the country must remain practical and ensure food security for its people. “Once this has been accomplished free market forces should be allowed to continue with the minimum food reserves maintained,” he wrote, while highlighting the positive impact of free market economies on the cost of living.
The Cooperative Republicans of Guyana (CRG), which Changlee leads, is a political party rooted in conservative values. It advocates for household financial stability, a stronger economy, improved safety and law and order, and better services in areas such as education, health, housing, and infrastructure.
