Six homeless after West Berbice fire
Six persons are now homeless after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their home on Saturday morning.
Rawle Thomas, a butcher and farmer from Lot 2 ‘D’ Edwards Village, West Bank Berbice, told reporters that he lived in the three-bedroom wooden house with his mother, wife, and their three children.
Thomas said he was at the backdam when he received the devastating news around 11:30 hours.
“By the time I arrived, the house was already in ruins,” he recounted. Fortunately, no one was at home when the fire started.
The Onverwagt Fire Station was contacted, and firefighters responded promptly, managing to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby mall. However, parts of the building, including the windows, were damaged.
Thomas noted that important documents and other personal belongings were lost in the blaze.
The family is seeking assistance as they begin to rebuild. Anyone willing to help can contact 648-4899.
