Stabroek News has issued a correction after it mistakenly reported that Venezuela’s Ambassador to Guyana, Carlos Amador Pérez Silva, denied that both Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed ever visited the Venezuelan Embassy in Georgetown.

In a clarification published Thursday, the newspaper admitted that the ambassador’s comments referred only to Azruddin Mohamed and not to his father, Nazar Mohamed.

“In Tuesday’s edition under the headline ‘Ambassador denies Mohamed ever visited Venezuelan embassy,’ Stabroek News erroneously reported that the ambassador had said that neither of the Mohameds had visited. This is not so, as he had only spoken about Azruddin Mohamed. Stabroek News regrets the error and apologizes to the ambassador for any inconvenience caused,” the paper stated.

Nazar Mohamed’s visit to the Venezuelan Embassy had been widely publicised earlier this year, with video footage circulating online showing him leaving the premises. The visit came months after Foreign Affairs Minister Hugh Todd summoned Ambassador Pérez Silva to explain the frequency of visits by the Mohameds to the embassy. It was later confirmed that it was Nazar Mohamed, the elder Mohamed, who had gone there.

Following Tuesday’s publication, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued a statement reaffirming that the ambassador had, in fact, confirmed Nazar Mohamed’s visit and even shared details on the documents submitted and the reason for the engagement.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation notes with concern the recent comments made by the Venezuelan Ambassador in Georgetown and questions why the Ambassador is being secretive about the visit of Mr. Nazar Mohamed to the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela regarding a visa application,” the statement said.

The clarification comes at a time when both Azruddin and Nazar Mohamed, along with several of their companies, remain under sanctions by the United States Department of the Treasury. The two were also indicted in the United States earlier this month on 11 criminal charges.

Azruddin, who launched his We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Party and contested the 2025 General and Regional Elections, finished second overall but has since faced scrutiny over alleged links to the Nicolás Maduro administration in Venezuela.

The revelation of his father’s embassy visit has reignited questions about the Mohameds’ relationship with Venezuelan officials at a time of heightened regional sensitivity over Guyana’s sovereignty and diplomatic transparency.
