The Government of Guyana has expressed fresh concern over the rise of transnational organised crime in the region, warning that criminal networks linked to narco-trafficking are posing a serious threat to peace and stability.
In a statement on Thursday, the administration pointed to groups such as Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles, which has been flagged as a terrorist organisation by several countries in the hemisphere. Officials say these operations aren’t just about drugs — they have the potential to undermine democracy, cripple state institutions, and slow development across the region.
“Such criminal networks have the capacity to overwhelm state institutions, pervert the rule of law and threaten human dignity,” the statement noted.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali has repeatedly called for closer regional ties on security matters, and the government says it will step up collaboration with international partners to tackle the issue. Guyana plans to support joint initiatives designed to dismantle criminal organisations and limit their influence.

The statement added that by confronting the threat together, regional states can better protect their citizens and ensure the Caribbean remains a “Zone of Peace.”
