The attorney for Dion Richards, the truck driver accused of causing the death of Curtly Christopher Cambridge in a road accident, is asking the court to drop the charge, arguing that the police have failed to prove their case. The matter is being heard before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

The accident occurred on November 8, 2023 along the Triumph Public Road, East Coast Demerara. Richards pleaded not guilty and is out on $400,000 bail.

According to the defence, Richards, who was driving a motor lorry at the time, was turning onto Triumph Access Road when the motorcyclist, who was allegedly speeding, crashed into the rear left wheel of the truck. Photos of the scene were shown in court, and the defence says they prove Richards was not driving recklessly.

Attorney Bernard Da Silva questioned the credibility of the police investigation. Two officers, Cpl. Maurice Smith and Constable Daniels reportedly gave conflicting statements about who took key measurements at the scene, leading the defence to accuse them of fabricating evidence.

The defence further argued that a post-mortem report found traces of alcohol in Cambridge’s body and no skid marks were seen at the scene, suggesting the motorcyclist may have been speeding and did not try to brake.

Da Silva told the court that the prosecution has not proven Richards caused the crash and asked that the case be dismissed at this stage.

The matter continues before Magistrate Gibbs.
