“Take your time on the roadways” — Region Six Police Commander urges amid increased accidents
Following a recent increase in accidents in Region Six, including several caused by speeding, Region Six Police Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus is urging motorists to be cautious when using the roadways.
During a recent engagement with reporters, Bacchus said that all accidents recorded in the region this year were the result of reckless driving, including alcohol consumption.
“It is evident that the driver would have raced down the road at Number 36 Village, Corentyne. They not too long departed a bar, and that bar, you can only go there for one thing, to consume alcoholic beverages. That investigation is ongoing, among others,” he said.
It was reported that around 23:00 hours on January 11th, 2026, Sumesh James of Lot 1, Number 36 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was driving motorcar PXX 9161 with an occupant, his cousin, 22-year-old Lakhram Etwaroo of Number 35 Village, Corentyne, proceeding south along the eastern driving lane of the said road, allegedly at a fast rate of speed. James lost control of the vehicle, colliding with a GPL utility pole, then with motor car #PAE 7288, which was parked on the eastern side of the road on a concrete bridge.
Etwaroo sustained injuries to his body and was rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police confirmed that James fled the accident scene but was later arrested. He is expected to face charges soon.
At approximately 11:14 PM on Thursday, January 15th, Shacke Rowe, 33, was riding an unregistered motorcycle at a high rate of speed, proceeding south on Main Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice, when he lost control and collided with a stationary motorcycle owned by Alistar Scipio. The crash caused Rowe’s motorcycle to hit a utility pole, which then fell onto a parked vehicle. Rowe’s motorcycle skidded further, striking additional parked motorcycles and a Fish and Chips stand, injuring both Rowe and the stand operators.
Rowe was found unconscious and is currently hospitalised with a fractured skull and body lacerations, while the stand operators received treatment and were discharged.
Commander Bacchus noted that despite being previously cautioned by the traffic department about speeding, Rowe continued his reckless driving, which led to his involvement in the serious crash.
“We are pleading with road users of all categories to take their time on the roadways. Leave home early so you wouldn’t be late, and there would be no need for you to speed down the roadways. There are speed signs as to the speed which you should use at various areas in Region Six,” he revealed.
So far for 2026, Region Six has recorded three fatal accidents and one serious accident.
