A taxi driver was remanded to prison on Wednesday after being charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm in Region Six.

Jayz Halley, 23, a taxi driver from Stevedore Housing Scheme, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the Reliance Magistrates’ Court.

Halley was charged with possessing a firearm without a license, an offence alleged to have occurred on June 27, 2025, at the Central Police Station compound in New Amsterdam, Berbice.

The charge involves one suspected .38 calibre firearm and five matching rounds of ammunition. The charge was laid under section 16(2)(a) of the Firearm Act, Chapter 16:05.

Halley was not required to enter a plea. Subsequently, Magistrate Matthias remanded him to prison, and he is scheduled to return to court on July 21.

Halley was among four men who were arrested in Region Six after an intelligence-led operation prevented a planned robbery at a Chinese supermarket in New Amsterdam.

This publication reported that at approximately 14:00 hours on June 27, two vehicles travelling from Georgetown were intercepted by a senior police officer and other ranks at the access road to the Berbice River Bridge.

During the search, a .38 revolver with serial number J465543 was discovered in a compartment beneath the steering wheel, along with five matching rounds of ammunition.
