“There is no way Venezuela will take Essequibo” – Min. Parag at Reg. 2 flag-raising ceremony
Waving the Golden Arrowhead high in the air, Guyanese from all walks of life came out in their numbers at the Anna Regina Car Park in Region Two to witness the Flag Raising ceremony to usher in Guyana’s 59th Independence Anniversary.
The atmosphere, which was charged with patriotism and solidarity, saw those in attendance reflecting on Guyana’s rich cultural heritage and the unbreakable spirit of its people.



Addressing the gathering was Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Sonia Parag, who touched on Venezuela’s claim to Guyana’s resource-rich Essequibo region.
The Minister firmly stated that Essequibo belongs to all of Guyana and that the country is standing on the right side of history. She assured the public that no external force could take Essequibo, and the Guyanese would stand together in solidarity.
“There is no way Venezuela will take Essequibo,” she declared, which saw loud applause from the assembled crowd.
The Minister also commended the Joint Services for their continued efforts in safeguarding Guyana’s borders.
The flag raising ceremony featured patriotic songs, cultural performances, and moments of reflection on Guyana’s journey since gaining independence in 1966.
Simultaneous flag-raising events were held at Supenaam Waterfront and Charity. Guyana will celebrate its 59th Independence Anniversary on May 26.
