Sarafina Pitt, 32, and Shamay Bryan, 33, both of Smithfield, New Amsterdam Berbice, appeared at Blairmont Magistrates Court before Magistrate Michelle Matthias on Monday to answer to the charge, which states that on Saturday, January 24th 2026, at Number 10 Village, West Coast Berbice, they had in their possession 345.8 pounds of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The two unpresented women pleaded not guilty to the charge.

During the court proceedings, Sarafina indicated that she is a housewife. Bryan stated that she owns a grocery shop.

While objecting to bail Police Prosecutor Sergeant Garfield Edwards cited the amount of narcotics and prevalence of the offence. He said that, given the seriousness of the offence, the penalty if found guilty will be hefty.

Edwards added that the two women were the only people inside the car at the time of the drug bust. He reminded the court that Sarafina, who was a former officer attached to the New Amsterdam Prison, was charged and released on bail for possession of narcotics. That matter is ongoing at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Edwards stated that, while on bail, Sarafina had committed a similar offence. He said that, in light of that, bail should be denied.

After listening to the Prosecutor, Magistrate Matthias refused bail and remanded them to prison.

The matter was transferred to the Fort Wellington MMagistrates’Court for further proceedings on February 12th.
