A fatal accident, which occurred at about 05:40h on Sunday on Belle Vue Public Road, West Coast Berbice, has resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
The crash involved a motor car bearing registration number PAD 9544, driven by 29-year-old Davin Daniels of Hopetown Village, West Coast Berbice, and a pedestrian, 49-year-old Mark George of Lot 2 Belle Vue.
The investigation so far revealed that the car was travelling east along the northern side of Belle Vue Public Road at a high speed when the driver lost control, swerved to the southern side, and collided with a roadside vegetable stand.
The vehicle continued eastward, striking a bus shed where the pedestrian was seated on a wooden bench. The car then collided with a utility pole on the southern side of the road, causing the pole to break and fall, which in turn crushed a nearby wash bay shed. The vehicle came to a stop at this point.
The pedestrian was pinned under the bus shed while the driver was trapped inside the vehicle. Both sustained severe injuries to their heads and bodies. They were rushed by public-spirited citizens to Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
The bodies are at Bailey’s Funeral Home, awaiting post-mortem examinations as inquiries continue.
