Guyana will continue to work closely with the United States on efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region, while avoiding speculation about any possible US action against Venezuela, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said on Thursday.

Jagdeo said Washington has long made its objectives clear, particularly its focus on disrupting the illegal drug trade. He noted that the United States has openly outlined the assets it has deployed in the region and the purpose of their presence, with senior US officials, including President Donald Trump, stating that the fight against drug trafficking is a central priority.

Jagdeo said Guyana fully supports any effort aimed at stopping the flow of illegal drugs, whether those drugs are destined for the United States or entering Guyana. He added that the government is prepared to collaborate with the US on all initiatives designed to block drug trafficking routes and criminal networks.

At the same time, the Vice President made it clear that Guyana will not engage in speculation about whether the United States could take action against the Venezuelan government. He said such matters are hypothetical and, in any case, would not be discussed in advance with Guyana.

According to Jagdeo, Guyana’s engagement with the United States has focused squarely on national security and sovereignty. He said US officials have given clear assurances that they support Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, including offshore areas within Guyana’s jurisdiction.

Jagdeo stressed that Guyana has no interest in speculating on military or security actions that may or may not occur elsewhere in the region. He said Guyana’s position is based on direct engagement and clear commitments already made publicly by the United States, particularly its support for Guyana’s territorial integrity and the presence of US assets in Guyanese waters.
