The High Court, presided over by Justice Sandil Kissoon, has ruled in favour of businessman Azeem Baksh Jr., ordering Vedika Sahadeo, trading under the name VALS Construction, to pay a total of $400 million due to dishonoured cheques.
The judgment, delivered on May 23, 2025, comes after Baksh Jr. filed a fixed-date application against Sahadeo regarding four dishonoured cheques issued by Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited, each valued at $100 million and dated between August and November 2024.
Justice Kissoon found Sahadeo responsible for the total amount due, awarding the applicant additional interest at 6 per cent from the filing date to the judgment date, and thereafter at 4 per cent annually until the payment is fully made.
Additionally, Sahadeo was ordered to pay $250,000 in legal costs, payable by July 4, 2025. The Court granted a six-week stay of execution on the judgment.
Justice Kissoon warned that failure to comply with the Court’s order may result in imprisonment or asset confiscation.
Attorney Marcel Bobb represented Baksh Jr., while attorney Sohan Poonai appeared for Sahadeo and VALS Construction.
This publication understands that Sahadeo borrowed money from the businessman to sustain the company’s operation, but failed to repay the funds.
