Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), James Singh, says the recent threats against his life are believed to be linked to drug networks operating out of Venezuela, which he described as a “narco state.”

Speaking to reporters today, Singh explained that investigators have received information about where the threat originated and the possible group behind it. He said the threat is still being monitored but noted that both local and international partners are paying closer attention to the organizations involved.

“In this field, there is always a threat. This one was more pronounced,” Singh said. “Most of the drugs coming into Guyana are from our neighboring country, Venezuela… They have a vested interest in intimidating us so their drugs can move freely.”

He said CANU continues to collaborate with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), the Guyana Police Force (GPF), and international counterparts to strengthen border security and disrupt the movement of narcotics by sea and air.

Responding to questions about arrests, Singh stressed that success for CANU is not just about seizures but preventing shipments from reaching Guyana in the first place. “Standing on 4.4 tons is not a success,” he said. “It should not have arrived at all.”

Earlier reports revealed that Singh and his team have received threats through foreign phone numbers, allegedly connected to South American and Caribbean drug cartels whose operations were disrupted by CANU. Singh said the threats are being treated seriously, emphasizing that they are not only against him personally but against the Unit -and by extension, Guyana itself.
