Weekly farmers’ market launches at Sophia with cheaper produce

Guyana’s Agriculture Ministry is rolling out a new weekly farmers’ market at Sophia, promising consumers cheaper produce while giving farmers a better return for their crops.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha announced that the market will operate every Wednesday, beginning this week.
The initiative follows instructions from President Irfaan Ali and commitments made in the PPP/C manifesto.
Mustapha said the market will allow consumers to purchase produce at affordable prices while creating another direct outlet for farmers to sell what they grow.
The weekly Sophia market will be complemented by monthly farmers’ markets across several regions.
The initiative forms part of Agriculture Month 2026, being observed under the theme, “Innovate, Nourish, Grow. Building a Sustainable Guyana.”
Activities this month will also include the inaugural Farmers’ Conference, the annual Honeyfest and World Food Day observances.
