WIN misleading Guyanese with recycled APNU+AFC promises—Jagdeo

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo on Monday night told supporters at Enmore, East Coast Demerara, that the newly formed political outfit—We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), led by U.S.-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed, is misleading Guyanese.

He said the promises being made were recycled ones that were never fulfilled during the former APNU+AFC administration’s time in office.

Addressing a large gathering at the public meeting, Jagdeo cautioned persons against being swayed by what he described as political gimmicks, warning that history has already shown the opposition’s track record of failed promises to the agricultural sector.

He reminded residents that under the previous APNU+AFC coalition government, the rice industries suffered serious setbacks.

“APNU, AFC and Mohamed are working together to achieve one objective. I hear them say every day, let’s bring the PPP/C down to a minority government. They know they can’t win the presidency. It is not going to happen; we are going to win the elections overwhelmingly with a clear majority,” Jagdeo declared, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Jagdeo pointed to what he described as a deliberate strategy, recalling how the APNU+AFC in 2015 promised rice farmers on the Essequibo Coast that they would receive $9,000 per bag of paddy—an assurance that was never honoured once the coalition assumed office.

“They went to the Essequibo Coast and promised rice farmers $9,000 per bag for paddy, and many people believed them. But when they got into government, they turned their backs on farmers. APNU+AFC cannot go back into these communities anymore, so now they are hoping that Mohamed will eat away at some of the PPP/C votes. He seems to be carrying away the strays for APNU,” Jagdeo said.

The Vice President argued that WIN was simply playing the role that the AFC once did for the coalition—acting as a spoiler to try to erode support in PPP/C strongholds.

According to Jagdeo, WIN’s Mohamed cannot gain genuine political support, so he is attempting to entice voters with money.

However, he insisted that such tactics would not succeed, noting that the governing party had strengthened its base by delivering on key promises and supporting farmers with real interventions.

Jagdeo emphasised that the PPP/C remains confident in securing an overwhelming majority at the next elections, as citizens continue to benefit from expanded opportunities, investments, and targeted support in critical sectors.

He urged parents, regardless of race, to guide young voters toward making the right choice—supporting the PPP/C, which he said has consistently delivered on its promises.

“If you hand the future of Guyana into the hands of people who you would not even trust to run your small business, then we are in big trouble,” Jagdeo cautioned.

Highlighting the strides made under the current administration, he added, “We have a glorious future in this country. We are uniting people, and I am so proud that President Cheddi Jagan’s dream is being realised—that our party truly reflects the nation.”

“Your vote is valuable. Use it to safeguard freedom in this country. Use it to safeguard progress in this country. Use it to safeguard the future of your children and your family. Use it to unite the people of Guyana. That is how powerful that vote is,” Jagdeo told supporters.
