Local artist Daniel Wharton, popularly known as “Baby Skello,” was granted bail today following charges of blasphemous libel related to a song, which insults a Hindu deity.
Wharton was initially remanded to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Court. However, his detention sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many users calling for his release.
In response, Attorneys-at-law Dr. Dexter Todd and Everton Singh-Lammy applied for bail before a High Court judge, who set the amount at $45,000.
Wharton is expected to reappear in court on July 1 to continue proceedings related to the charge stemming from the controversial song.
