48 murder trial listed as June session of Berbice Criminal Assizes opens

48 murder trial listed as June session of Berbice Criminal Assizes opens

Approximately 48 inmates are awaiting trial for murder as the June session of the Berbice Criminal Assizes opened on Tuesday.

The session commenced with the traditional parade along Esplanade Road. The parade featured several female police officers and a few senior male officers, including Region Six Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus.

Also in attendance were the Mayor of New Amsterdam, Wainwright McIntosh, and Deputy Mayor Kirk Fraser.

Justice Zamilla Ally-Seepaul is expected to preside over the criminal session, which will run until the end of October. Justice Peter Hugh is expected to take over later in the session.

A total of 59 cases have been listed for trial during the June session. Of these, 47 males and one female are listed for murder. Two males are scheduled to be tried for attempted murder.

Additionally, two males have been charged with engaging in sexual activity with a child, one male is charged with sexual penetration, and another is listed for trial for unlawful and malicious wounding.
